Data and Interfaces for Advanced Building Maintenance and Operation
Analyzing and interpreting building performance data is critical to the success of better performing buildings. This ASHRAE research project will help fill a void in standards literature by establishing data-driven metrics, interfaces and dashboards, organized by building type, that clearly quantify and communicate building performance to a diverse set of building stakeholders
Project Scope and Goals
RP1633 is investigating what data, metrics, visualizations and interfaces are useful to building operations, maintenance and management personnel. During the first part of the project, we will visit 50+ buildings across the country, investigating how various personnel use their building controls system, energy monitoring or enterprise management dashboards, and other systems to inform decisions about operating, maintaining and managing their building(s). The initial focus is to determine how each stakeholder uses information from these systems and what new types of information would be helpful to them.
The ultimate goal of this research is to identify what indicators and graphics are most useful to stakeholders and to incorporate that information into a set of mock dashboards which will be developed and tested in the final year of the study. We will revisit a subset of the original buildings to participate in the second phase of the project during which we will ask stakeholders to evaluate these mock dashboards. We aim to complete the project by summer 2013.
